We are delighted to announce a new professional development opportunity for teachers of the deaf
and trainee teachers of the deaf.
This autumn, Sue Lewis will deliver an interactive Language Assessment Course, designed to deepen understanding and strengthen professional practice in supporting deaf children.

Working with deaf children requires specialist knowledge and ongoing professional development. This course will provide:
- A deeper understanding of language acquisition, structure, and development
- Practical insights into analysing results from formal tests and informal assessments
- Tools to identify strengths, weaknesses, and next steps in children’s spoken and written language
- Opportunities to share expertise and learn collaboratively with colleagues
Course Structure
This blended programme combines face-to-face and online learning:
- Face-to-Face Workshops (9.30am–3.30pm) on either:
Saturday 18th October 2025 – Pendulum Hotel, Manchester
Tuesday 21st October 2025 – Connevans, Redhill, Surrey
Workshops are highly interactive, with limited lecture input. Participants will engage in small-group
discussions and hands-on analysis of assessment evidence across different age groups (preschool,
primary, and secondary).
– Follow-up Online Sessions – At least two sessions in the Autumn term and one additional session in
the Spring term – Dates and timings will be agreed with participants during the face-to-face day

10.15 – Language acquisition: principles, drivers, challenges, and assessment approaches

11.50 – Practical workshop: analysing test responses vs. natural language use

13.40 – Workshop continued: applying insights to literacy and written language
15.00 – Setting priorities for online sessions: participants identify a child/student to focus on, gathering
assessment evidence for analysis
